Hundreds of boy racers gathered in Tauranga over the weekend, sparking a significant police presence keeping a close eye on their activities.

Inspector Zane Smith from the Tauranga police said a large number of boy racers gathered in the Western Bay of Plenty on Saturday night.

"A large number of boy racers were in Western Bay of Plenty Saturday night. It is estimated that approximately 500 vehicles attended," Smith said.

Participants came from across the Bay of Plenty and the Waikato, he said.

Smith said there was a large police presence with 25 road policing officers involved in monitoring the group's activities.

"There were few issues other than the congestion associated with the large numbers of vehicles involved often moving in convoy," he said.

Facebook posts confirmed that the group were meeting up at Chapel St car park, before moving on Mount Main Beach and then heading to Pāpāmoa Plaza.

Another Facebook message said a vehicle had been impounded on Saturday after doing a said.

Another Facebook messenger said they could not believe how "chilled' the police were.

Smith said he was unable to confirm whether anyone involved in the gathering had been charged with any offences until later this week.
