A person has been critically injured in a two-car crash on State Highway 29A in Tauranga.

The person was travelling along the highway when the collision happened, near the Maungatapu Rd on-ramp about 10.40am, not far from the Maungatapu Bridge.

Police attended and diversions were in place but the highway has now reopened, a police spokeswoman said.

She said a person had been critically hurt and the Serious Crash Unit had been called.

Traffic was heavily backed up and motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.

The spokeswoman warned of significant delays.

Diversions include a redirection of traffic at the SH29A and SH2 roundabout at Te Maunga.

Any traffic travelling from SH2 by Baypark Stadium towards Tauranga is being turned around, she said.

Traffic coming from Maungatapu roundabout is also being stopped as police and contractors work to investigate and clear the scene.
