“There may be an increased police presence in the area while police’s inquiries are ongoing,” a police statement said.

A bypasser told the Bay of Plenty Times police tape was blocking the entrance to the car park from the beach, and there were several police vehicles at the scene.

Focus appeared to be on a vehicle in the carpark.

More to come.
