New Zealand woke up this morning to a swarm of earthquakes, including an 8.1 quake in the Kermadec region, which has wrapped the country in tsunami warnings, both on the east and the west coast.
Wave surges are hitting parts of the New Zealand coast as thousands of evacuated residents are being told to stay on higher ground following a massive 8.1 magnitude earthquake in the Kermadec Islands.
Much of the North Island - including Northland, parts of the Bay of Plenty and the East Coast - are under a tsunami warning and entire towns, such as Opotiki, have been ordered to evacuate although some residents are staying put. There is no timeframe on when the warnings might lift.
Other coastal areas are under a beach and marine warning, including Auckland, where residents have been told to stay away from beaches. Video shows wave surges already hitting areas like Tokomaru Bay on the East Coast.
Hundreds of workers, students and residents have headed to higher ground after a third, massive Pacific earthquake this morning - and a tsunami threat that affects much of the Northland, Bay of Plenty, East Coast and upper West Coast coastlines.
Residents were told to move immediately to higher ground after the magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands, 1000km northeast of New Zealand, at 8.28am (NZT).
