Seven reports of the issue have been received and, to date, there have been no reports of injury or serious property damage.
The repair involves updating the wiring system and replacing the machine's back panel.
This will bring the product up to current design and has been thoroughly tested to meet the highest safety standards.
The repair is easily and quickly done in the customer's home; there is no need to remove the machine.
As a precaution while awaiting the repair, customers are advised only to operate an affected machine if they are present or nearby to monitor it.
Customers are also advised that if there is any concern about how the machine is operating or if they notice any burning smell or smoke, the machine should be turned off at the wall and unplugged.
It should not be used again until it has been inspected by an authorised technician.
Haier spokesperson Matt Orr said this was a rare occasion and customer safety is a top priority for the company.
"The need to recall any product is disappointing, but we stand behind all our products 100 per cent. Our approach is always to support our customers and fix any problems that arise. We apologise to customers who are affected, and for any inconvenience or disruption this process may cause.
"Haier takes the production and quality of its products seriously. This repair has been thoroughly tested, and we are confident it meets the highest safety standards specified. The issue has also been addressed and resolved in production."
Mr Orr said every effort will be made to proactively contact customers with a potentially affected washer via the company's own records and through working closely with dealer and service networks.

· Information to help identify machines, locate serial numbers and book a part upgrade free of charge is all available via Haier's website www.haier.co.nz/recall, in recall notices and by free call to 0800 004 920
· These are 5.5 and 6.5kg capacity top load washing machines. The model number can be found on the top of the machine, under the logo in the front left corner. Machines included in the recall were manufactured between August 2012 and August 2013, and were therefore likely purchased from as early as mid-August 2012 and as late as mid- 2014.
· To confirm if a machine is included in the recall via website or phone, customers will need the serial number from the back of the machine. Again, guidance for this is available in recall notices, online and via phone.
