New Zealand professional Peter Fowler continued on with his hot form at the Omanu Golf Club's Legends Pro-Am yesterday, but his round of 67 was no match for that produced by Anthony Gilligan.
The Australian, who began his round on the short par four 16th, shrugged off a slow start
that saw him one over the card after two holes to record eight birdies without any further blemishes.
Fowler, who fell to colourful Australian Rodger Davis in a playoff at the Wairakei Seniors on Saturday, claimed outright second-place ahead of four players in a tie for third place one shot back. Davis was not his normal self on the way to a 74 which left him way out the back.
PGANZ national events manager Jim Clelland said the condition of the course drew rave reviews from the mixed field of amateurs and professionals. "It was set up deliberately to be generous for the amateurs," Clelland said.
"The professionals didn't mind - they'd play down the road if the money was right."
