Tatiana Manion and Boss have been together for almost six years.

The 29-year-old Mount Maunganui resident bought the golden labrador when he was only a year old, and was not surprised he was amongst the most popular breed of dogs in Tauranga.

"Labradors have a great nature. With Boss, I can just leave him and I don't get worried.

"He's great with kids and is very loyal."

Ms Manion said 7-year-old Boss sits at the entrance of her Tawa Street dog grooming store and greets customers.

"He just loves the attention and cuddles and pats. He is also really good to the little dogs which come in."

She told the Bay of Plenty Times Boss went through a 12kg bag of special labrador food every three weeks. "He eats dog food in the morning and at night. But he's really clever and sometimes waits to see if he can get food from us before he eats [his own]."

Ms Manion said the 7-year-old labrador had a strong personality and was well-liked in the community.

"He knows when everyone has their mocha [coffee] time and will go out and meet people.

"I don't have to worry about him because everyone knows him and I know he'll just come back."

But all the labradors that come in to the store were like that, said Ms Manion.

"They love to get groomed and have such a good personality. Even when I first got Boss, he used to go to the beach by himself and come back all wet."
