If fans of the television show 7 Days are anything to go by, everyone from old ladies to bashful teens will flock to Tauranga's Wharepai Domain for a giggle on Thursday.
The Outdoor Comedy Store - said to be New Zealand's first dedicated outdoor comedy show - will star TV comics
Paul Ego, Ben Hurley, Dai Henwood and Wilson Dixon.
Ego told the Bay of Plenty Times that 7 Days had a wide appeal and its fan base was sometimes unexpected.
"Old ladies come up and say 'I always watch on Friday night, it's a little bit naughty but I love it', or a young guy who possibly isn't quite old enough to be watching it yet. It's kind of a guilty pleasure," he said.
Ego will act as host for the Tauranga gig, introducing his mates and co-stars from the TV3 show.
"We will pretty much be on individually - I will be the ringmaster if you like, introducing the acts, talking to the crowd and doing stuff in between and making up some rubbish."
While he's modest about his own comedic talent, Ego can't speak highly enough about his fellow comedians who will share the stage in Tauranga.
"You really could not get three better acts, to be honest. They are pretty much the top three acts in the country at the moment.
"It will be really great."
Ego's "day job" is doing the breakfast shift as a DJ on radio station The Rock but he says comedy is his first love.
And though The Comedy Store gig is while he's officially on holiday, he doesn't mind.
"I would consider it more play [than work], definitely.
"The Rock is a lot fun as well but comedy is what got me into radio in the first place."
And making 7 Days is as much fun as it appears, he said.
"We really do, it's absolutely marvellous.
"We are delighted to have had such a good response from the public. The feedback has been absolutely wonderful and it's coming back [in 2011]."
He believes the show, which features guest comedians as well as a core cast, has offered a huge boost to New Zealand comedy.
"I think it's made a huge difference. It's been a great chance to show a lot of other acts, it's been absolutely awesome exposure."
* The Comedy Store: Ben Hurley, Dai Henwood, Paul Ego and Wilson Dixon, Wharepai Domain, Tauranga, Thursday January 6. Gates open at 6.30pm, show stars at 8pm. Tickets available from TicketMaster, GA $45 and Chilax Pack tickets $75.
The Bay of Plenty Times has three double passes to The Comedy Store to give away. To enter, send an email to competitions@bayofplentytimes.co.nz with your name, address and phone number, and "comedy" in the subject line by 9am Wednesday.
