Future of Tauranga Marine Precinct to be discussed

An update on Tauranga's Marine Precinct is expected to be heard at a Tauranga City Council meeting today.

The City Delivery Committee will meet at 1pm and are expected to discuss the marine precinct project and developments made up until last month.

Stage one of the precinct was expected to pump more than $45 million into the region's economy and employ about 195 people.

Another $5 million needed to build the marine precinct's basic infrastructure was coming from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council which was partnering large projects that provided sustainable economic benefits.

The detailed terms of the funding received from the Regional Infrastructure Fund provided by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council were being drafted into a Funding Agreement.

Remediation of the entire site to remove historical contamination was completed during March. A Site Validation Report was completed, confirming completion of the consented works.

The basic infrastructure consisted of the boat travel lift with a minimum capacity of 200 tonnes, construction of a sea wall and building the hardstand on which boats rest in cradles.

The future of the project will be discussed further today.
