The weekend could barely have worked out any better for Northern League Division Two contenders Tauranga City United.

Spurred on by a pair of favourable results elsewhere and news the club has secured a new major sponsor, the Blues romped home 5-0 against Oratia United AFC at their Links Avenue fortress yesterday.

Their 3-0 lead at the break was built on a steady, unflustered foundation pivoting around captain Sam O'Regan at the back, who time and again picked his targets with a scything left foot.

The first goal came from a long distance Adam Roach throw from the right sideline that found the prolific striker Jack McNab's glancing header on the edge of the six-yard box.

The second fell to the right foot of Andrew Cooper on the edge of the box - his powerful strike blasting through the Oratia goalkeeper after fine lead-up work from Jerahl Hughes and Jordan Culpepper.

The third of a fine opening half is likely up there with the strikes of the season.

A signature O'Regan floating long ball found Hughes - who alternated often with Cooper on either flank - on the overlap down the right side.

A quality touch to the inside allowed Hughes to slip his tight defender, but the left-footed thunderbolt he smashed into the back of the net after steadying himself was something else.

The game failed to reach the same peaks in the second half, save for the composed finishing of Hughes.

The English import slotted two carbon copy goals following up on McNab half chances to complete the 5-0 hiding and record his first hat-trick for the club.

Hughes was happy to get his second, third and fourth goals of the season, and spoke about his growing combination with the strike force of McNab and Cooper.

"[Switching wings] is something that me and Coops do, it's not planned or anything.

"For a defender it's hard because one minute you're playing against me and the next Coops who's left-footed. We just like to mix it up," he said.

"Macca is a proper No10 isn't he? He holds the ball up, finds players, and scores goals - important goals."
