Heavy fog smothered parts of Tauranga this morning. Photographer John Borren captured some of the fog while on his way to work.

Fog blanketed parts of Tauranga this morning, as autumn's cooler mornings set in.

Two flights in and out of Tauranga Airport were delayed but it were not fog-related.

Airport manager Ray Dumble said it just had the one delayed flight which was due to an engineering delay. Passengers were asked to wait about 35 minutes.

Another flight expected to fly from Auckland to Tauranga was also delayed.

"It's really, really rare, fog like this. But we can still take off in a fair amount of fog," he said.

The fog was expected to lift this morning, with drizzle predicted to turn into showers and a high of 24C today.
