Kel Travers talks about how he has been given the green light for a huge floating water park at Tauranga's waterfront.

A massive floating water park set for Tauranga waterfront has been given the go-ahead.

Waterworld Inflatable Waterpark will be operated by Dialled Indoor Trampoline Park and owner Kel Travers said resource consent was granted by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council on Monday.

Fifty inflatable pieces would be erected on the Tauranga waterfront next Wednesdayand a safety check conducted by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council would take place on Thursday.

If safety checks were successful and a Navigation Safety Licence is obtained, Waterworld would be operating in Tauranga before Christmas.

The water park would be the largest in New Zealand and the first in the Bay of Plenty.

About 5000 tickets to the inflatable park had already been sold.

Travers said many of the bookings he had received were from people who would be travelling from outside of Tauranga.

"We are getting lots of inquiries from people from out of town and lots of them will be visiting especially to come to the water park. This will definitely be bringing people to the area."

Travers said he had received positive feedback through Facebook with the initial post announcing the arrival of the water park receiving nearly 10,000 likes, 7000 comments and more than 3000 shares.

"Watching this whole experience and watching it go viral has blown me away."

Travers received more than 300 job applications for summer staff and he had employed 30 people which included 18 qualified lifeguards.

He said he was pleased to have head lifeguard Chris Webber leading the crew because he had 25 years of lifeguarding experience.

"I think it's going to be a really exciting summer for Tauranga and hopefully the amazing weather keeps going," Travers said.

Bay of Plenty Harbourmaster Peter Buell said he was working closely with Kel Travers to ensure he had a safe water park.

The water park and its location were welcomed by Tourism Bay of Plenty in the planning stages.

Tourism Bay of Plenty head of marketing Kath Low said she was pleased to see interactions with the waterfront after the success of the tidal steps.

"We are always keen to see new ventures and attractions set up which will entice visitors to stay longer."

Owner of Harbourside City Backpackers Sarah Meadows said the location of the water park was beneficial for her business.

"I'm really excited, the water park will be right in front of us so it will be great for our target market."

Meadows said the inflatable course would not only be an additional activity to offer backpackers but it would also provide job opportunities for her customers too.

"I think this is a really positive thing for the Bay and will bring a bit of fun factor to the area," she said.

Ralph Ward, owner of The Phoenix restaurant located at The Strand, said anything that attracted clients into the CBD was welcome.

He said more visitors to the area was beneficial for not only The Phoenix but for all businesses on The Strand.

Duty Manager of the Crown and Badger Phil Peakin said he could not see any negatives to having the water park located at The Strand.

"It should be fun ... bringing more people into the area can only be a good thing."
