Firefighters were called to Bayfair Shopping Centre last night to initial reports the building was on fire.
The Mount Maunganui brigade were called to the shopping centre at 7.55pm and residents reported hearing sirens in the area.
However, a fire service spokesman said the incident was a false alarm.
