A scrub fire in the Tauranga suburb of Kairua is now 90% suppressed, Fire and Emergency says.

Firefighters responded about 2.45pm after receiving a report of smoke in the area.

The fire was in gorse and toetoe in an area about 10 metres by 10 metres.

In an update shortly after 4pm, a spokesperson said the fire had been 90% suppressed.

Three fire appliances, two water tanks and a specialised rural crew were at the scene.

A witness who drove past just before 3pm said the “huge fire” was in the hills behind the Baypark stadium.
