Fire breaks out on Motuopae Island, in Tauranga Harbour

A fire has broken out on a small island in Tauranga's inner harbour.

Firefighters are mobilising to head to Motuopae Island, which sits just west of the city's CBD.

The first 111 call about the fire was received at 4.50pm.

The tiny island, also known as Peach Island, sits in the Waikareao Estuary. it is uninhabited.

The land is considered sacred ground and is home to a cemetery.
