Tauranga SPCA's Valentine's adopt-a-thon will be held this weekend with dozens of kittens, cats and puppies in need of loving new homes.

Operations manager Margaret Rawiri said there were about 70 kittens at the shelter available for adoption and about 80 kittens still in foster care before coming to the shelter.

There are about 25 adult cats, a lot of which are the kittens' mums, and about 14 puppies available, she said.

"Giving them a second chance at love goes hand in hand with Valentine's Day. The day is all about love, you can show an animal just as much love as a person. We hope people will come and fall in love and find their forever friend and family member."

Mrs Rawiri said 40 animals were adopted during last year's adopt-a-thon weekend and this year she was hoping for more.

The SPCA in Alach St, Greerton, will be open from 10.30am to 4pm on Saturday and 10.30am to 3pm on Sunday.

There will be a sausage sizzle and a second-hand pet gear sale running both days.

There will also be a 20 per cent discount on adoption fees.
