Police have released the name of the man who died in a fatal train crash at Otamarakau yesterday.

He was 64-year-old Ohope man Arthur Terrence Delahunty.

The man died after the car he was driving collided with a train near State Highway 2, Otamarakau, Whakatane, about 8.30am on Wednesday.

Police extended their sympathies to Mr Delahunty's family at this difficult time.

Whakatane Police are still seeking any witnesses to the crash to contact the police on 07 308 5255.

The cause of the collision continues to be investigated.
