Fatal crash on Maungatapu Bridge

UPDATED: 8:10pm: Three other people have been injured in the fatal crash near Maungatapu Bridge.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith said one person was status two, one was status three and one was status four.

7:45pm: One person has died in a crash on the Maungatapu Bridge.

Police Northern Communications Centre Senior Sergeant Money said one person was deceased.

The southbound lane towards Maungatapu had been blocked off and diversions were being organised.

Mr Money said the crash was believed to be a head on.

Traffic was backed up on the Matapihi side and police were turning cars around on the Maungatapu side of the bridge.

The bridge has been closed. There is a police cordon at the intersection of Maungatapu and Wikitoria St and traffic was being turned around.

It was too early to establish when the road would be re-opened.

Two ambulances had left the scene and a tow truck had arrived.

EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to a crash on Maungatapu Bridge.

State Highway 29 has been blocked off from ASB Arena.
