There is the thought that the right footwear, handbag and hair-do is all you really need to make a great impression.

When you think about it, there's some real truth in this. You can be wearing the plainest of dresses, jeans or T-shirts, but if you're rocking a great boot and a statement handbag, you'll always look polished.

Every season, there's more choice when it comes to boot style and options. The staple for winter is a short ankle boot that can be worn with jeans and dresses alike. These are the most versatile boots, with the most options for pairing with a wide range of looks.

For example, you'll find you're able to bring out your dressier frocks and make them more casual. The most flattering ankle boots are the ones that finish under the ankle or have a dipped front; these reveal the slimmest part of the leg.

If you invest in another pair of boots right now, the knee-high boot is a wonder and will last you for many seasons to come. Flat knee-high boots are more readily available this season. These are super comfortable and mean that many skirts and dresses, even lighter summery favourites, can see the light of winter.

Put these items on with your knee-high boots and one of the cropped cardigans or jackets of the season.

Tassels, fringing and more tassels are the hallmark of handbag chic this winter. They feature on the cutest of bijou bags, through to the larger tote styles. Suede and colour are features too, as well as plaited details and hair. Colours range from the covetable rust tones right through to navy to match the penchant for blue across clothing.

Finding the right bag for you is just as much about trying on as it is for clothes. Bags need to be in proportion with your body.

So if there's only a couple of items you look to investing in, think about the right boot that's going to give new life to your wardrobe, and a bag that's going to put an added swing in your step
