It was like any other Sunday for the Garner family _ Samantha and her friend Kayla Rose, both 14, would spend the evening with Mosaic Church at Mount Maunganui.
And just like every other Sunday, Samantha's older brother Joshua waited at home for a text from his sister, and would go
and pick them up.
But last Sunday none of them made it home and now two families are planning funerals.
Mr Garner's Holden car hit a power pole just off the Maungatapu roundabout while heading towards State Highway 29 and Welcome Bay at 9.20pm.
Mr Garner died instantly and back seat passenger Kayla received massive head injuries in the crash. The former Selwyn Ridge student died in Tauranga Hospital about 3pm on Monday.
Samantha remained in an induced coma at Starship Hospital today, unaware of the death of her brother and friend.
Raewyn Garner said she was still at a loss to explain how she came to be organising one funeral and looking to a life-time of support for her critically ill daughter, now facing paralysis.
"It's hard being in two places at once," Mrs Garner told the Bay of Plenty Times.
"We don't know any more about the accident other than what we've read. Our thoughts go out to Kayla's family."
Mrs Garner said the friends would always go to Mount Maunganui's Mosaic Church on Sunday. Because she worked Sundays, Joshua, a computer technician, would pick them up instead.
She said she had lost a son, but three young boys had lost a father. Joshua was father to Jayden, 6, and four-month-old twins Rylie and Reegan by his partner Jasmine.
Mrs Garner said Samantha, one of seven children aged between 12 and 31, was in an induced coma at Starship Hospital.
"It will be a while before we can tell her the bad news," Mrs Garner said.
"We just want her to wake up. There's still no real change, but she's doing everything she should be. The doctors at Starship have been fantastic and they're prepared for any change. She's in the best place."
This morning Mrs Garner made the emotional journey to the airport to pick up her 18-year-old daughter Alyssha, arriving from London in time for her brother's funeral on Friday.
She said there had been no change in Samantha's condition overnight; she is listed as critical but stable. Today, Samantha will undergo an MRI scan and other tests, after which the family will know more.
Yesterday at the Garner family home in Hairini, Joshua and Samantha's siblings and relatives rallied in support after their parents returned to Starship Hospital in the afternoon.
Older brother Daniel Garner, 28, said everyone would remember Joshua in their "own little way".
"He loved his computers, technology and cars. [And] his kids," he said.
Joshua was quiet and kept to himself, Daniel said. He was a loving brother.
"It was too soon for him to go," Daniel said. "He was loved by all the whanau. He'll be sadly missed."
Samantha and Kayla were best friends who met at Tauranga Girls' College last year. Samantha is a ``bubbly, loud' kid, he said.
"Just full of life, always keen to get into anything," he said.
Although her condition was stable, the family acknowledged the serious nature of her injuries.
