UPDATED 9.11am: A walking party of 19 is at the centre of a land rescue attempt from emergency services as it unfolds near Te Puke this morning.

Police, ambulance and firefighters are at the scene where it is believed a person has become injured while on a trek toward a Otanewainuku walking track, a police spokesman told the Bay of Plenty Times.

It is understood a rescue helicopter is on stand by but it was not yet known how seriously the person might be hurt.
