Marion and Roy Lewin believe in helping others as much as they can.

The tales of generous Bay folk throwing their support behind this year's foodbank appeal are starting to flow in.

Eleven days ago we launched this year's Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal, in conjunction with The Hits, to benefit the Tauranga Community Foodbank.

Since then we have featured stories of kind-hearted locals - such as the staff at Tauranga ITM who donated about $1800 worth of timber, plywood and other materials to help get the foodbank up and running in its new building.

The business donated $5000 last year and $3000 in 2013 and expect to make a similar contribution this year.

It's also been great to learn more about the dedicated volunteers who help keep the foodbank going.

Yesterday, we featured a story on Tauranga couple Marion and Roy Lewin who volunteer their services. They believe in helping others as much as they can and that was what first attracted them to volunteering their time.

Mr Lewin has been volunteering at the foodbank every Tuesday for about 10 years. Mrs Lewin used to volunteer every fortnight, but two years ago began coming in every week with her husband. Both find the work rewarding and fulfilling.

"Sometimes when you bring parcels out, some of the people are just so appreciative of having some food to eat," Mrs Lewin said. "It just thrills you when you see the happiness on their face, that they have been helped."

Let's keep the momentum building. Schools out there - how can you help? Businesses - how about a casual Friday for a can?

Why not pop an extra tin in with your shopping this week?

If everyone chips in, we can help make this Christmas, and a large chunk of 2016, a lot easier for those needing a helping hand.
