One person has been taken to Tauranga Hospital after their car hit a barrier in Tauranga this afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the car hit a barrier on the State Highway 2 Cambridge Rd offramp about 1.30pm.

She said the driver was unwell, but it was not clear whether they started feeling that way before or after the crash.

A tow truck had been called to remove the car.
