A deep fryer caught fire in a Papamoa takeaway shop early morning.
A Northern Fire Communications spokesman said firefighters were called to a "small" fire at the Papamoa Beach Rd shop at 5.10am.
Fire engines from Papamoa and Mt Maunganui put out the flames.
