Tauranga is in line to get a Dance-O-Mat like the one in Christchurch which Prince Charles and Camilla danced on during their visit to mark the 60th Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth's reign.

Tauranga is in line to get a Dance-O-Mat like the one in Christchurch which Prince Charles and Camilla danced on during their visit to mark the 60th Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth's reign.

Get your dancing shoes on - a new Dance-O-Mat will be popping up on Tauranga's waterfront.

Trustpower has moved to town and as a welcome gift the company is donating the city a Dance-O-Mat.

The Dance-O-Mat is a coin-operated dance floor that anyone can use. You simply pop $2 in the slot of the modified laundromat machine, plug in your iPod or phone, put it on play, and dance to your own music for half an hour.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby said that the presence of more than 500 Trustpower staff was a huge boost for the CBD, and that the Dance-O-Mat was a very generous gift that locals and visitors could enjoy.

"The Dance-O-Mat is a fitting way to celebrate Trustpower's arrival in the CBD and symbolic of the kind of energy Trustpower has brought to our city," said Mr Crosby.

It was originally designed to bring life and energy back to the Christchurch CBD post-quake, and it certainly delivered on that promise, attracting thousands of people including Prince Charles and Camilla when they visited New Zealand on their 2012 Royal Jubilee tour.

Tauranga's Dance-O-Mat, only the second in the world, will be located on The Strand opposite Masonic Park.

Trustpower chief executive Officer Vince Hawksworth said that the company's move into its new purpose-built head office in February, and its central location, was already proving beneficial for staff, customers and the CBD alike.

"We're delighted to have moved to the CBD and we wanted to do something really positive and fun to thank everyone in the city for being so welcoming," Mr Hawksworth said.

He said Trustpower's community relations manager, Graeme Purches, had seen first-hand how much people loved the Dance-O-Mat in Christchurch.

"Graeme suggested it would be perfect for Tauranga, bringing people from all walks of life together and helping to brighten up the downtown area. We all agreed, and we are looking forward to seeing people stepping out in style down on the waterfront," Mr Hawksworth said.

The Dance-O-Mat is expected to be open for dancing by the end of this week.
