Dame Susan Devoy's Tauranga home has once again been the target of a burglar.

The Race Relations Commissioner and former squash champion told Newstalk ZB she arrived home about 8pm on Friday night after attending a funeral for the son of a close friend, and unknowingly interrupted a burglary in progress.

"Well I rang the police and thankfully they got there really quickly. But just before they arrived the person had got out upstairs and taken off," she said.

Dame Susan said it was the fourth time in 18 months her family had been targeted. The house was fully alarmed but the monitors had not activated on this occasion. Last March, burglars crept around Dame Susan's family home while her husband and her 17-year-old son slept and stole a TV set and PlayStation.

At Labour Weekend October 2011 the Devoy-Oakley Avenues home was also burgled. When the newspaper visited Dame Susan's home last night she declined to make any further comment. Dame Susan's appointment as the Race Relations Commissioner last week divided opinion with some Maori leaders such as Ngapuhi leader David Rankin and Mana Party president Annette Sykes calling for her to stand down.
