People have suffered damage inside their homes after a car crashed into a power pole in Mount Maunganui last night, resulting in damage to low and high voltage power lines.
The two-car crash happened on Matapihi Rd about 6pm and left powerlines strewn across the road.
Powerco said this afternoonthat the network power had been restored but there had been some customers who suffered damage inside their homes.
Network control manager Phil Marsh said about 40 customer homes had been affected.
"The electricity supply has been isolated for these customers and electrical inspections are occurring now."
He said Powerco advised those affected customers to ring their retailers (who they paid their power bill to) if they had any issues in the first instance.
"Customers should also take photos of any visual damage in their homes."
Powerco also said this was a timely reminder to treat power lines as live at all times, and to keep at least four metres away from power lines "as downed power lines can kill and cause serious injury".
