The Tauranga Harness Races yesterday attracted the best field of horses in the North Island, as well as some of the country's top drivers.
The beautiful weather was a major drawcard for the spectators enjoying the long weekend, but club president Garry Hardaker said there were also some knowledgeable punters among the festive crowds.
"We're so pleased with the weather and the crowd we've got, they're having fun. There's a heck of a lot on in Tauranga this weekend," he said.
Thundercats, Winery Tour and Jetsprints were just some of the events that could have taken people's time and money elsewhere over the weekend.
The competitors loved coming to the "sunny Bay of Plenty", he said.
"It's a different crowd to the galloping crowd, a bit more relaxed."
Lynne Panettiere headed in from Tauriko for the races with partner Kevin O'Neill and her daughter Izzi.
They were lucky to get in early and set up their gazebo in a great spot for a good view of the track, Ms Panettiere said.
They were loving the live band in between races, an annual tradition, and enjoyed a picnic lunch.
Guitar player and singer Graeme Hardaker got roped into performing by his brother and club president, Garry.
Together with piano player Neil Pepper, the duo brought the audience a selection of "oldies but goodies" during the day.
The crowds erupted as the horses approached the finish line, proving there were some keen punters among their ranks.
And the novelty pony trot races for kids was a big hit, with eight young competitors having the chance to get involved.
