New Zealand is on the brink of climbing atop the croquet world at the Club Mount Maunganui.
The hosts of the MacRobertson Shield - contested by holders England, New Zealand, USA and Australia every three or four years - have been in devastating form in the third test doubles andenter today as hot favourites to claim overall honours.
New Zealand were well on top yesterday afternoon with a lead that had English referee Ian Vincent joking about closest challengers England adopting America's Cup tactics.
Vincent, who hails from Nottingham, said it was widely expected that England and New Zealand would meet in the decider.
What was not expected, however, was New Zealand's pronounced dominance on the opening two days of the deciding third test.
With 12 singles matches remaining for each of the world's top four nations, Vincent turned his attention to praising Croquet New Zealand for their smooth running of the event.
"The hoops are set more tightly and precisely than for any other competition I've known. There is only 1/64th of an inch clearance."
The action is due to wrap up on Wednesday, but if the home side's current hot form holds up there will likely be a victory shout at the adjoining watering hole well before then.
