Cricket: Mount take points in the rain

Rain interrupted another weekend's play in the Western Bay of Plenty, with a number of games called off due to the bad weather.

Both fixtures in Katikati produced a first innings, but were abandoned later in the afternoon.

Batsman Vaughan Wilson returned for Te Puke in the reserve grade match against Katikati.

He rejoined the team after his big OE and smashed 108 in his side's total of 275/6, with Gurman Singh (54) and Supreet Singh (45) also making solid contributions before the match was called off.

Elsewhere, Mount Maunganui reached 287/7 against Tauranga Boys' College second XI, with Joel Thompson blasting the weekend's highest total of 109.

Russ Williams continued his good form on his way to 76, with Daniel Elyashiv and Brad Howard each taking two wickets for the Tauranga students.

The Mount side grabbed the win when they dismissed Tauranga Boys' for 188, with James Hanson a rock at one end, reaching 58 before being dismissed.

Mount veteran bowler Steve Charman showed he had lost little of his skills, taking three wickets for just 15 runs while Jonty Rhodes returned 3/16.

R&A Sangha banked their second successive victory when they were removed Cadets for 186 in pursuit of their total of 214.

GS Sandhu (41 runs) and Dev Sangha (four wickets) were standouts for the victors, while Grant Manners top scored with 45 runs for Cadets.

Sikh Sports posted 194 and Greerton were 50/1 when play was stopped for the day.

While the Katikati versus Greerton B Grade game wasn't completed, the three other matches produced results.

The Te Puke representatives in the B Grade competition continued their dream start for their debut season. The Singh XI chased down the Mount Maunganui total of 185/7, to take home a six-wicket win.

Wanderers posted 168/7 before Grasshoppers chased the target down for the loss of six wickets. For the Hoppers, Wayne Anderson took two wickets and posted an unbeaten 45 runs. Cadets beat Albion to hold a share of the early season lead on the ladder.
