Bay of Plenty vs Counties Manukau at Bay Oval

Two further individual Bay of Plenty Development team performances took the Bay second XI to victory in their ND Development game with Counties Manukau, as well as the current season ND Development title.

Bay of Plenty took first use of the batting strip at the Bay Oval. The opposition bowlers had early reward, with the home side at five down for 63 runs.

The arrival of Ben Pomare changed the momentum of the game, taking control to hammer 114 runs at a tad less than a run a ball.

Pomare put on two game-winning partnerships of 48 runs with Niven Dovey (25), and then a further 49 runs with Bay number nine Dillon Preston (23). When Pomare was dismissed with the last ball of the Bay of Plenty turn at bat, the Bay had reached 258 all out.

Counties made a scintillating start to the reply and were 65 without loss.

Bay of Plenty first-change bowler Tim Pringle then entered the fray, to rip out the Counties top three for just three runs, to have the Bay team well and truly back in the match.

Pringle went on to remove the Counties middle order to finish with the outstanding figures of seven wickets at a cost of 25 runs, as Counties Manukau were rolled for 122 to hand Bay of Plenty a 136-run win.

A Sunday-evening phone call to Northern Districts competitions controller confirmed Bay of Plenty had won the ND Development competition prize of the Basil McBurney Trophy. The victory over Counties re-inked Bay Development coach Russell Williams' earlier statements that the winning performances have been spread throughout the players in the team, who have stepped up with standout individual performances, in times of need.
