A head-on collision that seriously injured a man and a woman has sparked warning from police for drivers to take greater care on the roads.

The pair were hurt in a collision at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Minden Rd, Te Puna, about 5am yesterday.

One person suffered significant abdominal injuries and the other a deep laceration. Both were taken to Tauranga Hospital and were last night in a stable condition.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the head-on crash was one of eight collisions in the region over the weekend.

"Three involved alcohol but the majority of the crashes were at intersections.

"It's really important for people to take extra care around intersections. We tend to be over-represented in intersection crashes in the Western Bay of Plenty.

"We need to make sure people are choosing good gap selection."

The crashes follow a series of collisions in the Western Bay, including the fatal crash that claimed the life of Tauranga man Dion Pollero, 29, on the Kaimai Range.
