Traffic is heavily backed up on SH29 at Mauntapu after a crash.

Traffic is heavily backed up on State Highway 29 at Maungatapu after a crash this morning.

Two cars were involved in the crash near the exit for Maungatapu, under the Taipari St overbridge about 7am.

Fire communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay said power firefighters were called to the scene but no one was trapped. It is understood one person is being treated by St John ambulance.

Ms Ramsay said power authorities have been called, as a lamp post has been hit.

However, power does not appear to have been affected.

It was not clear if the crash has blocked the highway completely but motorists were advised to avoid the area until emergency services are able to clear the scene.
