Police said Reid Rd was closed between Cross Rd and Awahou Rd after a two-vehicle crash was reported about 8.30am.

Three people are seriously injured after a crash near Whakatāne.

Police said Reid Rd was closed between Cross Rd and Awahou Rd after a two-vehicle crash was reported about 8.30am.

“The road is completely blocked,” a statement said.

“Emergency services are on scene and attending to at least two serious injuries.

“Police asks motorists to avoid the area.”

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said one person in a critical condition and two in a serious condition have been airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

One person also in a serious condition has been taken to Whakatane Hospital by ambulance.
