A section of State Highway 29 has been closed after a car crashed, flipping onto its roof today.

Reports are coming in of a car crash having closed part of State Highway 29 in Tauranga south today.

A reporter at The Lakes said it appeared the section of SH29 between Takitimu Drive and Pyes Pa Rd was closed to traffic.

''Traffic is being diverted around The Lakes,'' she said.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said police had received reports of a crash on the highway between Barkes Cnr and The Lakes roundabout at 10.48am.

It was believed two cars were involved in the crash and one of the cars had overturned, he said. Some of the occupants had minor injuries.

Mr Campion said the crash had caused a significant backlog of traffic so police were asking people to avoid the area and use other routes. He said motorists could use Cheyne Rd or Takitimu Drive to get around the scene.

Reports came in about 11am of a car having rolled at Barkes Corner, the intersection of SH29 and Cameron Rd.

More soon.
