A section of Hewletts Rd was closed for nearly an hour-and-a-half yesterday after a truck brought down gantry signs and traffic light signals.

Head of Western Bay road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the truck was turning right from Aerodrome Rd on to the Hewletts Rd flyover while the deck of the unit was still tilted upwards.

"It struck the overhead gantry sign and traffic light signals and blocked the lane over the flyover," Mr Campion said.

The road was closed shortly after 6am and remained closed for about an hour and 20 minutes, he said. "Diversions were in place along Newton Rd and Aerodrome Rd. There were no injuries."

Power authorities were called as well as contractors for the various equipment. Mount fire service station officer Paul Van Kol said Mount Maunganui firefighters were first on the scene and stayed until police and power authorities arrived.
