A cow is believed to have been hit and killed by a logging truck on Stage Highway 29 in Tauranga.

The report of the collision - reported by the truck driver who continued on their route - came after several people called police to report two stock wandering on the highway in the Tauriko area.

A police spokesman said the first caller at 6.39am reported "two black beasts" on the highway between Cambridge Rd and Gargan Rd.

Three other callers reported stock on the road in the area. Police forwarded the reports to the council.
