Council candidate falls ill during flight home

Radio journalist Grayson Ottaway was rushed to hospital in Canberra.

Tauranga City Council candidate and aviation enthusiast Grayson Ottaway has had another brush with sickness while undertaking journalist duties abroad.

This time he was briefly hospitalised in Canberra last Wednesday after falling ill on a flight home to commemorate Singapore Airlines' first Capital Express flight linking Singapore with Canberra and Wellington.

Mr Ottaway said he was part of a media contingent and was about halfway through the flight when he become unwell.

"I was attended on the plane by the cabin crew and a Singapore-based doctor who happened to be a passenger on board the flight and answered the crew's page for assistance."

Mr Ottaway said the flight landed normally at Canberra International Airport just after 8am Australian Eastern Standard Time.

"The aircraft was met by paramedics and I was transported by ambulance to hospital where, after tests and observation, I was released late Wednesday afternoon."

He was put up in a hotel and returned home on the second Capital Express flight to Wellington on Friday where he boarded an Air New Zealand link flight to Tauranga.

"I feel in good health today and have no after-effects. Since arriving home I have had another medical check-up and all is well. As far as I am aware, my illness on this occasion has no connection to any other illness I have ever suffered,'' he said after the Bay of Plenty Times sought comment.

"I feel tickety-boo. Everything shows I am fit and healthy. I'm not sure what caused it," he told the Bay of Plenty Times.

Mr Ottaway made headlines when he collapsed in June 2013 during coverage of the Paris Air Show and ended up in a coma for a few days.
