Most people who visit New Zealand on their OE try to absorb as much from this country as they can but Matt Clark is more inclined to give something back.
The young Englishman is nearing the end of his two-year working holiday and is spending his last precious months helping others
in our community.
The 25-year-old got in touch with Volunteer Western BOP at the Historic Village and has since put his IT and graphic design skills to good use.
He has recently finished overhauling the website of Tauranga's Grief Support Services - free of charge - and is keen to re-design Volunteer Western BOP's own website.
"I'm working part-time at the Port of Tauranga as a stevedore, helping unload ships and things. The work is sporadic and I often find myself with long periods of no work," he says.
"Rather than sit around waiting for work, I decided to give something back to New Zealand. I've enjoyed myself so much here. The people are so friendly and every place we've been we've been made to feel welcome, so this just feels like the right thing to do," Mr Clark said.
He happily operated a recycling station at the Historic Village during the National Jazz Festival, and is on the lookout for more web design work.
"It's nice to do something where it's not about the money but about helping the cause," he says.
Volunteer Western BOP manager Margaret Butler said Mr Clark was a "quiet, unassuming, affable young man" who had been extremely helpful.
"He is quite unusual. We do get a lot of overseas people coming in but we don't often get men volunteering their time so we've been extremely impressed by him," Mrs Butler says.
Tauranga's Grief Support Services thought Mr Clark had done a "fabulous" job redesigning their website, and Mrs Butler planned to take him up on his offer to help her own organisation.
Mr Clark says he has had such a buzz from helping people out that he intends to continue volunteer- ing when he returns home to Peterborough, England, in October.
"My family back home are all very supportive. Mum and Dad are proud and glad to see I'm not just sitting around doing nothing," he says.
