Maunganui College Sports Awards Junior Sports Girl of the Year: Molly Shivnan Molly broke two school swimming records, two BOP swimming records and won six medals at the NZ Elite Short Course Swimming Championships, including a gold medal in the U13 girls' 50m freestyle. She won three individual medals at the NZSurf Life Saving National Championships.
Junior Sports Boy of the Year: Shalom Broughton Shalom captained NZ U16 boys' basketball team and is also the school's Intermediate boys' athletics champion and broke the intermediate shot put school record.
Contribution to Sport in the Community: George Haswell George won the BOP Rugby Senior Referee of the Year award. An amazing achievement for a student so young.
Contribution to Sport in School: Justin Pickering Justin coached the MMC junior boys' team to second at the Division One Boys' Water Polo North Island Tournament. He has also coached many of our students in the Tauranga U16 B team.
Sport Team of the Year: Surfing Team The surfing team won the national title for a record fifth consecutive year with two NZ representative surfers unavailable as they were competing overseas.
Most Outstanding Female Sporting Achievement for the Year: Elin Tawharu Elin was third at the U16 World Championships and won the NZ U16 and U18 surfing titles at the NZ National Surfing Championships.
Most Outstanding Male Sporting Achievement for the Year: Kehu Butler Kehu won three international surfing events in Australia competing against some of the best junior surfers in his age group. He came seventh at the World Junior Surfing Championships in the U16 Boys Division.
Senior Sports Girl of the Year: Julia Kayes Julia is in the Premier One netball team and was selected in the Upper North Island Secondary School Tournament Team. In water polo she made the NZ U17 team at Pan Pacific tournament. She is the senior girls' swimming champion and in the senior A girls' basketball team.
Senior Sports Boy of the Year: Bae Fountain Bae is an outstanding member of our senior A boys' water polo, basketball and volleyball teams. In water polo, he represented NZ U16 team in a test series against Australia and was also selected in the NZ U18 team that went to the world championships in Montenegro.
Otumoetai College Sports Awards The Otumoetai College Sports Awards were held on Tuesday, October 18.
This year 201 students were invited to these awards, with many of them achieving extremely high in more than one sport. Extra mention and congratulations to all the students that received Merit and Blues awards, especially those who were awarded more than one for achievements in different sports.
There were 84 Blues and Merits this year which is more than last year and just shows how much sporting talent there is within Otumoetai College.
