Motorists are reminded that State Highway 36, the Tauranga Direct Rd to Rotorua, will be closed this weekend.

New Zealand Transport Agency said the highway will be closed from 9pm Sunday to 5am Monday to allow for works at the Mangapouri Gorge Bridge.

People travelling between Rotorua and Tauranga during the closure are advised to use SH5 and SH29 over the Kaimai Range or Hamurana Road, SH33 and SH2 through Te Puke.

The alternative routes will add approximately 20 minutes to normal travel time. The work is weather dependent and will be postponed to May 3, if necessary.

Earlier today, the agency warned of delays on SH29 as contractors carryied out major road works that involves rehabilitating a 1120m stretch of SH29 near Soldiers Road and the Te Ahara bridge.

The work started on March 30 and will be done in three stages. It is expected to be complete in late May.

The agency also warns of stop/go traffic management and a speed restriction of 30km/h north of Tauranga, near Athenree Gorge.

Contractors will be working to prepare a slip near Bridgeman Lane on SH2.

The work will continue for approximately four weeks between the hours of 6am and 7pm.

A 70kmh speed restriction will be in place outside of the stated work hours.

Motorists are advised to allow an extra five minutes when travelling on this route.
