Bethlehem Birthing Centre is all about giving babies the best start in life.
For some Tauranga families it is a struggle to find the money to buy nappies, wipes and baby food.
When the birthing centre discovered the Tauranga Community Foodbank needed donations of these goods, it decided to step in and help by donating to the Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal.
Bethlehem Birthing Centre co-founder and director Chloe Wright said the birthing centre was delighted to be able to help - and it made perfect sense to supply baby goods for the appeal.
"Many Tauranga people give generously to the foodbank, but items specifically for babies are not something most people would think of.
"When we heard that nappies, baby food and baby soap were too expensive for the foodbank to buy but were always in demand, we thought it was a perfect way that we could help.
"At the birthing centre our goal is to give babies the best start in life - and sometimes their families need a little extra help."
Mrs Wright said Bethlehem Birthing Centre asked staff to donate items, which were collected in a baby bath.
The bath was then put in reception so that families visiting new mums and babies at the birthing centre could also donate. The centre has topped up the donated items.
"The foodbank is a great cause, and it's especially important that babies have all the essential items when their families are struggling," Mrs Wright said.
"At Bethlehem Birthing Centre we like to provide a safe, nurturing environment and a loving, peaceful and supportive atmosphere.
"Our aim is that families can take this feeling home with them, and have a positive start with their newborn. This can be difficult when times are tough due to financial stress," she added.
"We hope that our donation will make Christmas a little easier for families with babies who are struggling."
