Eleven children were found unrestrained in cars on Western Bay of Plenty roads in a recent joint Plunket and police sting operation.
More than half of the children checked were in restraints which had fitting faults.
As part of the recent 15th annual Kiddi Klick Week, plunket officials and othertrained child restraint technicans assisted police at checkpoints and stopped 314 cars to check children were restrained correctly, and the restraints were also correctly fitted to the car.
Of the 481 children checked, 11 were unrestrained and 270 child restraints had fitting faults, of which most have been described as "potentially dangerous" in a crash situation.
A Plunket spokeswoman said the results were "rather frightening" given the number of crashes happening on the roads.
