9.01am: A boy who was smashed in a windscreen when he was hit by a car in Papamoa has been taken to the doctors but is not believed to be seriously hurt.

The boy had been riding a bike along Sandhurst Drive when he was hit near Grenada St this morning.

Police were called at 8.37am but ambulance staff were not needed, said police at the scene.

The boy suffered minor injuries, despite smashing in the windscreen of the car when he was hit.

The boy had been picked up his mother and taken to his local GP, police said.

Earlier: A person has been hit by a car in Papamoa.

The person, believed to be a boy, had been riding a bicycle when he was hit.

A police communications spokesman said officers were called to the area of Sandhurst Drive, near Grenada St at 8.37am to reports a male had been hit off his push bike.

The area is often busy in the morning with school children heading to the nearby Tahatai Coast School.

It is understood the boy hit the windscreen of the car, smashing it in.
