Tauranga Hockey are auctioning off the chance to be the official flag bearer for the Black Sticks Men in their upcoming tests against Japan in March.

The Black Sticks Men are taking on Japan in a three test summer series from March 12-15 at Blake Park, and as part of the series an online auction will give three people the opportunity to lead the New Zealand team onto the field for each of the three matches.

Tauranga Hockey general manager Clyde du Toit said they were hoping locals would win.

"When you come to a game of international hockey, you always get the chance to be up close to the action, but to be in the dugout and walk out with the players is at another level."

All proceeds will go to Tauranga Hockey Association for the future development of hockey in the community.

Tauranga City Council Mayor Stuart Crosby said the council had supported the new turf development with the view that it would accommodate local community hockey needs, but also to help Tauranga Hockey attract higher level competitions and international matches than was previously possible.
