On November 6, the House of Science is hosting its inaugural conference called Casting the Net.
This is a one-day symposium aimed at connecting the local science community and will be held at Bethlehem College's Performing Arts Centre.
Presenters are flying in from all over the country, but thereare also plenty of locals sharing their wisdom and showing off their products. The programme includes two keynote addresses by renowned and entertaining scientists Dr Siouxsie Wiles and Dr John Campbell.
Dr Wiles will entertain and inform about her work with bioluminescent bacteria. Dr John Campbell will cover a wide range of topics, including marine archaeology in Italy, using a nuclear reactor in France, growing ruby crystals at Canterbury, studying a Renoir at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, firewalking, floating in the brine ponds at the Blenheim salt works, and using a train of lasers in Germany in an attempt to increase the density of storage of information a thousand fold.
There are also four workshops throughout the day with plenty of choices; there will be something for teachers (primary and secondary), tertiary students, researchers, scientists, local industry representatives and anyone else interested in science. At just $45 for the day (including morning tea and lunch) this event is not to be missed.
The House of Science would like to thank key sponsors for this event: Zespri, Priority One, SciPad, Page Macrae Engineering and the University of Waikato.
