Life-sized cardboard children will attend meetings, schools, hospitals and MP's offices throughout Tauranga today.

The cut outs are part of a national Buddy Day today, aimed at raising awareness of child abuse in the community.

Mount Maunganui Intermediate children were among hundreds of children in the Bay of Plenty who created the cardboard children, which will spend the day with various adults including local MPs Todd Muller and Simon Bridges and Tauranga Hospital staff.

Mr Bridges and Mr Muller were among a gathering of local leaders at Trinity Wharf this morning to lauch the event.

Olympian cyclist Sarah Ulmer was also at the launch.

The event, organised by Child Matters, originated in Hamilton and was last year held in Auckland, Wellington and Tauranga.
