Police are calling for witnesses after a car was ripped in two in a crash overnight, with no one to be found.
Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said police were called to reports of a crash on State Highway 29, between Barkes Cornerand Route K, at 1.42am.
However, when police arrived there was no one to be seen.
''A vehicle has left the road and received significant damage when it left the road and impacted with a ditch.
''It appears to have been cut in half by the impact,'' Mr Campion said.
''Obviously there's a possibility a person may have been injured and we are making inquiries to locate the owner and occupants of the vehicle. That's why we are calling for witnesses.''
