A car has plunged into Tauranga Harbour today near the 11th Ave overbridge.

A reporter at the scene said there were tyre marks along the grass from the city-bound lane and the car, right-side up, was sitting in the harbour about 40m from the shore.

The driver appeared to be unhurt and was out of the vehicle speaking to police about what happened, the reporter said.

A large contingent of police, fire and ambulance personnel were all at the scene.

A bystander said the driver was "pretty lucky to escape without injury".

The reporter was told that the recovery of the vehicle would be a matter for police.
