Car overturns on State Highway 2 in Tauranga, injuring one person

One person has been taken to hospital after a car overturned on State Highway 2 in Tauranga tonight.

Only one vehicle was involved in the crash, near the Waihi Rd on-ramp on the Bethlehem side, a police spokeswoman said.

She said St John Ambulance has taken one person with moderate-to-serious injuries to Tauranga Hospital.

A report of a car overturned was called in by the Fire Service at 8.10pm, the spokeswoman said.

An eye witness told the Bay of Plenty Times that she saw a car up on its side about a kilometre before the Bethlehem roundabout.

She said cars were stopped around it.

There are also reports of surface water on the road in the surrounding area and contractors have been called in, the police spokeswoman said.

A tow truck has also been called to the crash scene.
